Science Lesson

So we've been talking about the circulatory system in science and my first lesson in the classroom was labling the heart followed by a lesson on the blood flow through it. Now we are talking about disease and I had athersclorosis. So to iontroduce the topic to the class I made video from a website I learned about in class this past semester, www.xtranormal.com. It allows you to type what you want each character to say and then you press preview and it'll say it for you. With this being said, I was pretty impressed that they were able to prounce atherosclorosis. So I played this in class and referred back to it during my lesson. It went over well and when asked questions that referred to the video, the kids were able to answer showing me that they paid attention. It was pretty cool. I think that I put the bar up a bit so I'll have to make another one for my next lesson.

Week 2 at Westgate

Some Dancing at Westgate from Mitch Catacutan on Vimeo.

So here's what the fuss is all about at Westgate: this new guy is getting kids to dance!!! Here's proof. We did some jive one week and then I did a hip hop lesson where they picked cards that had dance moves on there (shopping cart, robot, grapevine, etc) and they had to come up with their own routine. Now kids from other classes hear about this from their friends who have me and they ask their teacher if they can learn dance. My supervising teachers say how kids are asking when am I teaching again in their class. I've inspired a girl in one of my classes to offer to teach the class jazz dance on Monday. Should be fun and hopefully I'll have some video of that.

As I was in early to shoot with some students, the vice principal came in and told me that he's been hearing some complaints about me. I was quite shocked as he had a pretty serious look on his face. I responded "really" in a crack voice. In a serious face he said, "I hear that students are having TOO much fun in gym class" and quickly smiled after he said that. It took me a second to realize that he was joking around with me and once I figure it out, I smiled and replied "well, is that a bad thing?". As he went to leave the gym, he said "thanks for all the great stuff you've been doing here." It was really pretty cool to hear this.

I've been going into shortly after 7 to work with basketball players on their shot because they want to make the team. It sucks that I'm going to most likely cut a few of them and they are the ones coming in and putting in the effort. One mom came up to me and asked if her son had to come to all the practices if he son made the team. I didn't quite answer at first but said that anyone that makes the team will have to attend all practices because I didn't know who's mom she was. So I asked her who her son was and it was a kid who's runners were so old that he looked like he was skating when we ran lines. The mom said that he's getting new basketball shoes and that she's so pumped to see him out for something outside of school. I feel bad though because I'll be cutting her son next week and she'll probably go out and get him new shoes this weekend. As much as I'm excited about coaching, this is the part I hate the most. I love to see the enthusiam but when it comes down to it, I can't take everyone. Wish that there was more time in the day so I can do something for these kids that want to play but aren't good enough to make the team. So many kids call me Coach and are going out of their way to be nice to me. They really want to make the team and I know they won't think I'm as cool after I cut them.

Once my team is made though, I'll be really excited to get to work. We moved up to AAAA this year so we'll be playing some quality basketball this year. I def won't have the offensive fire power that we did last year but having some players for the second time around will make for a better defensive team. Coming into tryouts I didn't think that we would have much of a bench but we have some younger brothers of guys who played for me last year and they are the 2 of 3 people that can do a left handed lay up at full speed. So I think that we will be about 9 deep with a starting lineup of four 6 footer returning players and one provincial point guard. I am expecting this team to be one of my best defensive teams that I've ever coached (tough to top one of my Prov teams though). I hope that you can come and check out a game this year. I'll be sure to post our schedule on a regular basis.

So that's my week. Sorry it went longer than I had orginally intended. Enjoy the video.

A random night with G-Bo, Saint Kris and Sungnation

So I was coming home from golfing at Heckla when Saint called and asked if I wanted to be a part of a freestyle video like the old nike vids. It was an easy yes and after picking out some outfits, we got to prov and try to bring out our best moves. Can't wait to do the next version.

This is actually posted so that I can show this as part of my basketball lesson. You should still check it out anyways.

How do we Assess?

Assessment Riot from Mitch Catacutan on Vimeo.

Here's another music video that was made for class and this time it was for marks. As part of one of our last writing assignments, we were given the choice to show what we've learned in a different way like a video, podcast, etc. After the success of our first video, Jen and I decided to make another video talking about assessment as, for, and of learning. Jen came up with the idea for the song, wrote the lyrics, and used her beautiful voice once again. It's a fantastic song and we added in some jive, swing, and lindy hop moves in there to go with the music. Jen has been teaching me some moves and hopefully someday I can be as good and her friend, Thor, who is feautred in the video as well (you'll know which one he is). Anyways Hope that you enjoy it. Thanks again Jen, had a great time and thanks for making me look so good.

Today with Rob Goodman

Here's another video that I did for a presentation. Our book that we had to present was a series of interviews so we decided to present it in a newscast kind of form. My group had tons of fun filming this. The filming didn't go perfect so I've included a small blooper reel. The presentation went great with many of laughs (including laughing at ourselves) and we got a great mark. So here it is.

Enjoy

Just Having a Blast

So with just over a week left of classes before I head off to rip it up at Westgate Collegiate, I've been having some troubles doing homework. I've actually been trying to find other things to do to keep me from doing work. It was last week where I couldn't sleep and I ended up watching a video that my brother had made (inspired by Eric and Cam's video) to make one of my own. So I sat down and wrote a song about school. It was intended to give us a bit of a laugh to release a bit of the stress that we are all going through. It funny how much I'm inspired by my classmates who I would call friends by now. We get along so well and enjoy learning together so much that we've asked to see how we can keep the same people for next year. It's not just 7 or 8 people that want this; it's ALL 28 of us. Pretty cool if you ask me. Anyways, so I got a great voice and now a good friend to sing and we made something that we wanted to dedicate to our classmates. They bring out the best in me and I just wanted to say thanks in a creative way. Thanks and enjoy!

Video #2

Duel from Mitch Catacutan on Vimeo.

So the day I showed my teaser video to the class, is the same day our prof wanted us to bring our cameras to class so that we could film and edit a short video. We all needed to have a video for our Wiki pages that we were making so this was our class to learn and experiment. So we had about 45 mins or so to come up with something. My group was Keith, Nathan, and Jean and after watching some hockey highlights on the net and not really coming up with anything we could all really agree upon, we had wasted about 15-20 mins. So with what we had I came up with a typical 2 guys fighting over the girl kind of scene. We filmed it quickly, came back and put it together with some music and added a couple of special effects. Keith actually showed me how to do slow motion and add text to the screen. So in about 25 mins we came up with this. Enjoy.

And So It Begins.....

Sr Stream 1C teaser from Mitch Catacutan on Vimeo.

Alright, this is a special moment and I'm proud to debut my very first video creation. It all started this past week when I decided to try and make a video for my cohort. As mentioned in a previous blog (see below), my cohort is super cool (previously mentioned as pretty cool but they've been up graded since). Sorry Eric but this could be the best cohort EVER!!!! That's right I said it. Even this past week I learned that a few of them play guitar (and played while we sat on the grass during lunch yesterday), one painted a portrait of Obama with knives (pic to be posted at a later date), and one played a bar of the Imperial March in a presentation (to a roaring applause). Each day I learn more and more about them and not only are they great people but they are going to be great teachers as well. I could go on and on about them all day but let’s get back to the story….

So I've been carrying a video camera around for the past week. It started with documenting a video my group is making for another presentation (I think it's our last one together this semester, kinda sad). Every since that 830 meeting on Tuesday, I've been trying to film as much of my class experiences this week as I can while paying attention. I've had to explain on more than one occasion to my profs what I was doing. Thanks to my cohort for allowing me to point a camera at them all week. Some are a bit shy which is okay and some are starting to warm up to it. A few started to wonder what I was thinking/ trying to do and I explained in one of our classes that I thought about doing a class year book kind of idea. So to ease their nerves a bit and give them a look at what I wanted to do. So I made a quick teaser video to get them to hopefully be a little more open to the camera and some ideas I have to show the greatness these people have. It was a bit risky to make it my first ever video but what the heck.

At first I just had some pics that one of my profs asked us to take in our first class. Unfortunately, there was only 21 pics of the 28 members. So I took these pics and thought about creating a quick slide show to some music. So I took them and tried to match the changing of the pics to the beats of Power by Kanye. Once I figured out a few things, I got it done with some simple clicking and dragging. After I watched it a few times, I decided to try adding in some clips. Using an idea that I've seen Saint do on some Inside the Mobb Episodes (Season Premiere coming soon) and add some clips that was chopped up to follow the beat. I ended up doing a clip and figuring out how to do it, got me thinking that I should try it to another song. So I used More by Usher and started to add more clips. Next thing you know it was like 430 in the morning and I had 830 class to get to. All I could think of the next day was getting home and finishing it up. After school I went over to Dela's place where he showed me a couple of things: adding in text and a simple transition. From there I was able to finish the rest on my own (which took me to about 430 this morning again). I pretty much done the video when I realized that I wasn't in there at all except for my pic. So I poked a lil fun at myself and tried to pull out my best dance moves (although I'm no Saint or Mike Garcia). I wanted to show them that I can be embarrassed sometimes too.

So the vid isn't quite up to the level of Saint, Eric, Cam's, etc. It's a bit choppy and doesn't transition as cool as in Mobb vids. Hopefully I will be able to learn from those Jedi Masters so that I can come up with something EXCEPTIONAL for my new friends. Here it is. Hope you like it.

School Update

So as most of you already know, I'm at U of M in their Education program. I'm in the sr stream with my teachables being phys ed and general science. I've been well "educated" by some good friends in second year about the workload that I will have to endure. A quick thanks to Eric, Trista, and Mark for showing me the ropes and making me feel cool for knowing some people outside of my cohort.

My Cohort is pretty cool. We are just starting to bond more. Between classes we'll hang out and chat at the tables or in our next classroom. We've had some presentations and seen some of the creativity that we have in the room. Last night was supposed to be an Ed Social at the new Area Night Club (the old OC) but since it was so busy, there were only 5 of us (that I saw) that got in. It would have been cool to have all of us there to hang outside of our school setting but the five of us had a great time ripping up the dance floor and hanging out. I think that we're going to plan another night where we can all go out together. The Limelight would be a good idea I think. I'd be interested to hear what people would sing.

The pic above shows the comments given to us by our psyc prof on our first big group presentation. We got an A for our role play and discussion of gender differences in schools. Props goes out to Rhianna, Jennifer, Rob, and Ashley. Everyone did a great job acting out our two scenes (a gym teacher getting his kids to do push ups and an English teacher handing out our graded papers) and we got a great discussion going on afterwards. Our Second presentation this week featured 4 out of the 5 of us teaching the rest of our class how to use Questioning in our teaching methods. We had another great presentation in which our teacher gave us some high praise. We're hoping that means that we'll be getting another A if not an A+ for our effort.

I have a great group and am pretty lucky to be working with them. For scheduling purposes, we've teamed up for pretty much all of our group presentations. We've done a pretty good job and spaced out our stuff to keep us from getting overwhelmed. This week was our hardest week with 2 presentations (along with 2 or 3 more assignments). Our group works really well together. Even though we meet early on most Tuesday and Thursdays (which are my days we should be sleeping in), we get quite a bit done and in efficient fashion. We are open to each others ideas and (even some of my crazy ones) let our work speak for itself. I know that each one of them will be great teachers. I've enjoyed learning from them as well as with them. More magic to come, stay tuned...

Another One Bites the Dust.....

Alright so a couple of weekends ago, another Ballzout brother caved in and got married. Yes Judd was the latest victim. I was truly honoured to be one of the groomsmen. For those readers that don't know the newly weds, Judd and Ashley have been going out for about 7 years. They have recently moved to Winnipeg after spending the last few years in Calgary. I am actually living in their basement as they have kindly offered me a spot in their awesome place. Most will get to see Judd on some Inside the Mobb Episodes (coming soon) as he has joined the infamous city men's team (which is now in Div 3).

The ceremony took place out at Dogtooth Resort just outside of Kenora with the reception to be held at the Inn of the Woods. I had missed the rehearsal on Friday night (because I was on the road home after school) but my beautiful partner, Brooke, filled me in quickly. It was nice that we were third so all I had to do was follow Dusty (Judd's Bro) in front of me (Brooke and I were 3rd in case you were wondering). The ceremony had lots of little interesting things happen. Tater, Judd and Ash's dog got out of one of the houses and made his way down the dock where we all were. Judd's nephew, one of the ring bearers, left his place on the dock once he ran out of smarties. The marriage license was left in the house and when we got it (after a short delay) it almost got blown off the table when a big gust of wind hit. At the end of it all, we had a new couple to introduce to the world.

After some pictures taken at Rushing River (Scott pushed Ryley into the water after they took a pee off the rocks by the way), we headed back into the town and celebrated the night away. Dinner was great and had some great speeches highlighted by a few "roasts" by Ryley and Scott which ended in a tearful Judd. The night was spent with some dancing, catching up with old friends, making new ones, and many double rye's.

It was sad to see the party end. But as the party ended, there was a new beginning. Congrats to Judd and Ashley. Best Wishes and much love to you both. Thanks for letting me be a part of your special day.

My New Responsibility...

So today was a very special day as Alizandra Maxime Dela Cruz was baptized. I have been given the honour of being one of the god fathers (along with Dela and his older broham John). Alizandra is the youngest of Mike and Karen's 3 girls (Elizabeth and Izabella) and like the previous 2, she cries shortly after I pick her up. Hopefully like her two older siters, she'll evenutally warm up to me and share her fruit snacks with me.

A promise was made today that I will always be there to support and guide her and I will try my best to do so. As I saw her today and held her briefly, I saw her in a new light. It's hard to describe but it felt different this time than the other times. It's just different when you're a god parent for those of us who aren't parents. It's like we're in part her parents and we and are responsible for the up bringing of this child. Like I said, it's tough to describe but I could only imagine how cool it feels to be a parent cuz I feel pretty cool being a god parent.

To Alizandra, I will always love you and will always be there for you no matter what. I look forward to watching you grow and being there every step of the way.

If you had to pick....

So it's 3 am and again I find myself watching Beverly Hills 90210. I just witnessed Brandon score a date with his editor, Susan. Ealier in the day, he had asked her to go to a dinner date at Dylan's girl's place (the girl the dies shortly after they get married-horrific moment in my 90210 memories, much like when Zach and Kelly broke up in Saved by the Bell)(I actually heard that her name is Toni, who was also the orginal noxema girl- wow how do I know all this, I feel like G-Bo with all this knowledge). Susan had to decline saying that if there was a chance they her and Brandon would go out, she would have to fire him. Instead of pushing to get the date, Brandon smoothly got her to admit that she was attracted to him after promising that he would go back to work if she did. Later on that day, Brandon went to her dorm and told her that she was quitting because he would rather go on a date with Susan than work at the school paper. She was a bit taken by it (maybe cuz she was in a bath robe) and eventually gave in. Not only did she agree on the date, she let him keep his job!!! Brandon is the f*ing man! He was prepared to give up his job for a date??? What a gamble that totally paid off. (wait a sec, this is the episode the Steve and Claire kiss for the first time!!!) He's the man. So it got me thinking about who's the better ladies man? Brandon Walsh or Zach Morris????

Zach was everyone's hero, even mine. He had Kelly, a cell phone, great hair, high tops with the jeans tucked in. He had his slew of women and eventually ended up with his dream girl. He knew all the tricks and pulled all the pranks that we as guys growing up always wanted to do.

Brandon on the other hand, live in 90210. His parents left him with a ballin' house. Had a super cool car. Sideburns. Style. The women....Kelly, Susan, Nikki, Emily, and Tracy are just a few of his girls. All of them..... where to die for. Heck during his younger days, he was king of the Peach Pit. He was the person that everyone went to for advice or he was there when no one else was. It was unfortunate the he didn't end up with his dream girl.

Even though Zach was the coolest cat growing up, I'd have to give the edge to Brandon. His way with the ladies is often immitated but never duplicated. What do you think? Is there any other tv character that could be compared to any of these orginals playas?

Fly like an....

As most of you know, I have a sick passion for golf. Breaking par someday would be a dream come true. As for now, I'll stick to trying to break 70 as I have had 3 rounds in the 70's: 2 rounds at 79 and my lowest at 78. Tips from anyone (dad, friends, etc) and everything (tv, vids, mags, etc) have helped me develop my game. It was only a few years ago I struggled to break 100. Ant said the other day that "you're a mid 80's golfer now eh?". As much as it was a surprise to hear that I have been shooting rounds in the mid-high 80's. My last five rounds go as the following: 86 & 84 At Kingswood, 84 and Cambridge, 80 at Pushlinch, and 93 at Doon Valley. I would have to say that I'm in a bit of a groove right now and would like to make a push to get into the low 80's by the end of the summer.

My game is nothing exciting. I don't bomb drives like Shane or Eric nor hit consistant irons like Jarrett. It's my short game that I heavily rely on to bail me out when shots are sliced or pulled. It was my dad's friend, Shorty, that told me years ago that over 60% of your shots are 90 yards and in. I've spent many hours on my own at driving ranges or course working on chipping and putting. So for those of you out there that are trying to break 100, start with putting and chipping. Not that I'm a pro but it def help me cut down over 15 shots over the past few years.

So anyone that plays golf understand how frustrating it can be. Most people dont' want to get into it or are easily discouraged to play it because the sport is so unforgiving. One little error in your mechanics and your ball could end up anywhere but where you want to go. A great round could be ruined but a missed 1 foot putt or a ball that goes into the bush or water. There is however a few shining moments in which we actually pull off what we had tried to do. Whether is bombing a drive down the fairway, hitting that chip close to the hole, or draining a long putt, we actually feel like Tiger Woods from time to time (Tiger the golfer anyways...). Here's my moment in time.

The only eagle I've ever had was on the par four 10th hole. The hole is usually a low 300 yards in length. I t jsut so happened that day, they were working on the tee boxes so they had temp ones about 40 yards closer than usual. So I bombed a 3 wood (my driver ALWAYS sliced) and landed it on the green and hit a 12 foot putt u phill that broke about a foot to the left. It was 2 great shots and a 2 on the score card but I just never felt that it was a true eagle because the boxes were moved up.

It was on the 2nd hole at Cambrige golf course. It was a 446 yard par five. I had hit a great dive to the left side of the fair way. From about 190 yards out, I crushed my hybrid and had a great bounce and roll up the dance floor. From where we were it looked pretty close so I was pretty pumped for a very rare chance at an eagle. As we made our way to the green, I found my ball about 6 feet below the hole. Feeling a bit nervous, I remember my last putt the day before to shoot a 79 where I wussed out and left it short. As I eyed my putt, it looked like it was straight. As I stepped up I told myself that this putt will not be short. Once I hit my putt, it wasn't long till I knew it was in. I gave my best Tiger inpression with a fist pump and I finally had a legit eagle. It was such a cool feeling and probably could have shot 100 for the rest of the round (thank God that I didn't) but still be so pumped going home. Anyways this is for all of us that dream for making big shots/ putts like this.

Happy Birthday Kya!!!!

Alright, I know that this post is a bit late but Happy Birthday (June 4th) to my lil niece, Kya. I was lucky enough to be here to celebrate with her as she turned one. Our outfits actually matched as you can see in the pics (not planned). Kya is the cutest human being I’ve ever set my eyes on. I wish that my eyes were a video camera so that everyone could see what I’ve seen since I’ve been here. She is so big now and is on the verge of walking(she actually just stood up on her own today for a few seconds) and talking. She is so playful with smiles and all the little things that she does: blows kisses, waves good bye, dances, and even whistles (which I can’t even do). I could just watch her all the time and be totally amused. I love her so much and will protect her as if she was my own. I know that Shane and Eva are so proud of her and they should be because they’ve created such a beautiful human being. Kya, I love you, will always be there for you, and hope to spend many more birthdays (and any regular days) with you.

FORE!

So if it ever stops raining down here in southern Ontario, my dad, Shane, Anthony, and I would love to get out and golf. Most of you already know how much I love to golf but it is especially special when I get to go with my dad and brother. We don’t get to spend that much time together since my brother lives in Guelph and this is the first time since his wedding that both my dad and I are down here at the same time. The last time we all golfed together was in Kenora a few years back. Unlike basketball, volleyball, or soccer; golf is the only sport in which all of us can play together competitively for many years to come. It’s the only sport left in which our dad can keep up with us (with the exception of darts, in which both my dad and mom lay a beating to me at the Legion one night in Kenora). Our dad taught us the etiquette of golf; don’t talk while others are taking their shot, don’t step on someone’s line, dress properly, leave your clubs on the flag stick while putting so you don’t forget them around the green, etc. Like any other sport, our dad would give us tips and pointers to help us get better.

Over the past few years, our golf games have developed and there has been friendly competition whenever we get out on the course. Each of us has our own style. Dad is more of an all-around player from tee to green. My brother hits a long ball (chicks dig the long ball we always say). He’ll use a pitching wedge at the distance that I’d use a 7 iron. As for me, I rely on my short game (that’s what she said haha). My advantage is my touch around the green chipping and putting. Our different styles make for an interesting round and we usually shoot around the same score. For those of you wondering at home, I usually shoot lower but last year Shane beat me for the first time.

So if we eventually get out on the course, we will be playing for something worth more than money….bragging rights! (even though we will toss a toonie around for closest to the pin on par 3’s). It’s just friendly competition because we are all cheering for each other to shoot low and get more birdies than bogeys. Either way, I’m just happy to be able to get out with the boys. Keep you guys posted.

Guelph '10 Part 1

Most of you know that I'm out of town for the next week or so. My parents, Anthony, and I are in Guelph for Kya's first birthday on the 4th. Here's a sneak peek at Kya who is so big now. She's actually been a little shy to start off but it took a day for her to warm up to me and at least let me hold her for a few mins. Tomorrow I will set out to find her present. Any ideas? I'll try to get some stuff up here as soon as I can. Bye for now.

"May the 4th Be With You"

My friend Leah texted this to me today. It took a second to kick in.....Get it? Leah knowing that I was a Star Wars fan (like most cool people I know) would appreciate this. It got me thinking how great Star Wars was and how I will always watch anything related to the story line. Am I selfish to ask them to make 7-9? Have Luke leading the Jedi Council? What do you guys think??? Until then, I'll have to settle for the Clone Wars cartoons (which I hope goes like 28 seasons). For all of us that dreamed of making our own Light Sabers (mine being a blue one), "May the Force be with You, Always"

Another One Bites the Dust....

Alright so most of us know that yesterday Dante left the Brotherhood of Bachlors. I first met Dante at the Winnipeg airport in January of of '07 as he came to Providence College. Little did he know what he was getting into. Being a UNC fan like myself, we instantly hit it off. This past year we got to do what we had been talking about since we met and that was to watch a game at Chapel Hill. Dante recently joined the Band of Brothers know as MOBB. Dante not only has added his toughness to our defense but has been deadly from the land beyond giving us yet another three point threat. He has quickly fit in with the team both on and off the court. Thanks Dante for everything and Congrats. Many blessing to you and yours.

Call me Coach not Mr Catacutan

Some of you may have already heard but last week I was accepted to the After Degree Education Program at U of M. Not going to lie, I was a bit surprised considering my poor GPA and a terribly written essay. Since that was the only 2 criteria they based my score upon, the reason I got in was the references that I got from Mr Laffin, Scott Masterson, and Graham Bodnar. You 3 probably said something that got someone’s attention. A million “thanks” to each of you. With that being said, this has been a life changing event and now I have new goals to reach for.

I have always wanted to be a teacher. I applied to Kinesiology instead of Education at Lakehead because I wanted to know more about my field. The significance of sport in our society and the thinking process of high performance athletes were two areas that caught my interest. A one point I was able to assess, diagnose, and treat any injury except for the back and neck. Unfortunately, after graduation I didn’t get into the school one year teaching program and a call from Saint brought me to Winnipeg. Teaching would be put on hold for the time being and even more so when I became a manager at Boston Pizza. I really thought for a time that I wanted to be a General Manager and run my own store. I thought that it would have been cool to be 30 and running a business but once in a while someone says something to you and a light goes off in your head…that’s what happened to me.

I think that it was Eric that said something to me first about teaching because he is currently in the program (and had just finished his first year). Something went off in my head and so I talked to Graham who was entering in his first year of teaching. After gathering as much info from them, I decided that it was time to try again to be a teacher. With great support from Ballzout members, Mobb members, and parents, I started the process and knew that sometime I would have to chose which path to take: the one I was working towards for the past 2.35 years at Boston Pizza or the one I originally set out to do. I didn’t get to chose but I did take the hint when Boston Pizza fired me from my management position. “The Lord works in mysterious ways” is what I always say (and I’m sure that other people say it too).

So I just wanted to give a few shout outs and thanks to everyone along the way. I probably won't get everyone I want on here but here's a few. In no particular order…..

-Jackie, Mike, Tyler, Adam – Thanks for the encouraging words. We need to plan a reunion sometime (or someone needs to get married haha)

-Mobb Members – love playing with you guys. I’ve gotten to know both Mike and Adam better this year and thanks to the both of them for including me in their circle of friends. More good times ahead of us both on and off the court.

Mr Laffin – you have always been my inspiration to coach and teach. Before our first tournament you told me to “lead this team. Have them feed off your energy” and I’ve tried to do that ever since. Roy Williams has Dean Smith to credit his success. I have you to credit mine. Thank you.

Judd – we’ve both have some tough times lately but we just keep helping each other get through it. Looking forward to having you in Winnipeg next year.

Ant – always telling it to me straight even if I didn’t want to hear it

Bob – always that calm guy that never seems worried about anything. No matter how old we get, you still get big blocks!

Dela and Moni – I can’t say enough thanks for everything you guys have done for me (especially over the past little while). As proud as you guys are of Kenston, I’m sure that Keston is just as proud of you guys.

Eric – probably the most brilliant mind in basketball I’ve ever met. You’ve always been there to help put things in perspective and encourage me. Looking forward to lunches next year at the school.

Graham – you always know what to say. You help me to believe in myself because you believe in me.

Saint – always there when I need you. I’ve played with some great players in my time but you are the only one that puts a sour look on my face after I watch you break down someone.

Shane and Eva – I’m glad that we are starting to see each other more than just once a year. Our times together are always so short but always special. Kya is just amazing

Mom and Dad – you guys were so happy to hear that I was going to do this. I’ve always felt that you guys wanted something better for me than Boston Pizza you guys were right. What can I say? Thanks and I love you guys.

So now it begins. Two years of hard work ahead of me. Time to walk the walk. Thanks to all my friends and family. I will always be there for you like you have been for me.

I will leave you with a quote that I heard from CBS announcer Clark Kelloge: "you need sunlight and rain to grow. Not just in plants but in people as well." Thanks for believing.

Peace and Much Love,

Mitch

College Basketball at its Best!

Last night’s Xavier/ Kansas State game was a game like no other in the this year’s NCAA Tournament. Anything that could happen last night could for these young men.

Example 1:
You’re up 3 and the other team has the ball, do you foul? Here’s why I will never foul in this situation: K State planned on fouling before the shot was taken. As Holloway went past a screen, Clemente for K State grabbed him as he went by to foul and put him to the line. But it wasn’t called. So when Holloway got around the screen, the next K State player came over to foul but at that time Holloway had already begun to get into his shot motion. This foul was called and now Xavier’s best FT shooter was on the line to make 3 to tie the game. Even after being iced after the second make, Holloway calmly makes the 3rd. Just let him make a shot of a lifetime – off balanced, with someone in his face. Now imagine if he makes the 3 and now they are shooting for the win??? Make them make shots is what I always say.

Example 2:
Never give up. No matter how much time was left. Xavier played so smart and did the right things to keep them in the game. They fouled quickly to keep as much time on the clock as possible. They took the first scoring option right away whether it was a drive to the basket or 3. Everyone understood who had to have the ball and what they had to do. This kept them within a shots reach at the end of regulation and overtime. Kansas State did a great job hitting their free throws down the stretch. Even though Xavier lost in double overtime, they showed tremendous heart and gave themselves a chance. They told everyone that they were prepared to play all night because they didn’t want to lose that bad.

Example 3:
Big time players step up for big time plays. Whether their NBA stock was rising or putting them on the map, Xavier and Kansas States best players were their best players. Clemente taking over in the second half; Holloway hitting the big shots and controlling the game, Crawford hitting the 3 send it into 2nd overtime; Pullen coming back to hit two 3’s after falling asleep on an inbounds play.

This is basketball at its best; two teams refusing to go home and willing to battle to the end. It's too bad that someone had to lose last night. I appreciate the effort. This is why I can't watch the NBA after the tournament for a while.

And So it Begins......

Anyone that knows me knows that this is my favourite time of year. Yesterday kicked off the best basketball tournament on the planet and if you missed day 1, you missed quite a show. With everything going on (or not going on) in my life, basketball always seems to lift up my spirits. I love to watch any and all games. Its great to see different systems, players, and coaches try to do their thing to advance and move on.

Yesterday had all the you can ask for: double overtime b/w Florida and BYU, a scare to most brackets (including mine) for 'Nova (common Scottie you need to do better than 2-15), a buzzer beater sending Murray State past Vandy, the top seeds handled their business (although it took Kansas a bit of a wake up call), Butler hit 13 3's in their game, a couple of Big East teams didn't show up (Notre Dame and Georgetown).

What will today bring? Who knows? If you ask me, I'd love to see Duke become the first #1 seed in history to lose to a #16 seed. I think that would be cool. Check out Even Turner from Ohio State today. I think that he should be a top 3 pick in the draft. Look for Purdue to lose to Sienna (Purdue hasn't been the same without Robbie Hummel). Cornell could shoot their way past Temple. That's just a few things that could happen today. Even though my brackets survived day 1 (kind of), I'd love to see any and all upsets. Enjoy.

By the way, my picks are: Pool #1 Kansas over Nova with Syracuse and Kentucky in the Final Four. Pool #2 Syracuse over Kentucky with Ohio State and Nova in the Final Four.

Who's your picks? or Fav moment of the day?

To Eva:

Happy Birthday Eva! Thanks for taking such good care of my brother and now Kya. I know that they can both be tough to handle at times. You are the little sister I’ve always wanted. Enjoy your special weekend from my brother.

Champions!!!!

Last night, the Westgate JV Basketball team became immortals as they lay claim to their AAA League Title. The Westgate Wings took on the St Norbert Celtics at St Norbert (took place 2 mins from my house!). SNC has had our number going 3-0 this year. Each game had been close and chippy for the most part. Each team so different in styles almost made it like Good Vs Evil (not to say that they are actually evil). SNC has a cocky, streetball style to them while Westgate is more team oriented. Earlier on Thursday, I told someone that I wanted to win so bad for the boys. That winning tonight would be like Good overcoming Evil. I told my guys before the game that believing in what we stood for as a team and honouring those values on and off the floor, made us a champions no matter if we won or lost the game. I told them that it would just be sweeter if we won!

We had made a couple of adjustments that we thought about after our second game against them. First we stayed with pressing full court against them. We had not pressed after the first game to try and cut back on the lay ups given up. However, instead of using the press to cause turnovers, we used it to slow them down and give them less time to run their offense. We noticed that they are pretty patient and when their initial looks breaks down; their coach would start yelling out what to do. I thought that by getting into the offence late, it would give less time for their coach to give them directions.

After 35+ turnovers the first game, we modified our press break to put a post in the middle of the press and a guard up the floor. We had a bit of success in our last game against them when we went to a smaller line up in our last game. The guard up the floor was able to catch and attack better. It lead to 3 or 4 lay ups and they actually stopped pressing us. We hoped that our posts were able to just catch and reverse the ball and not try and bring it up.

The last adjustment and probably the most important one was playing a 2-3 zone for the entire game. For those of you that don't know me as a coach, I have said on many times that I am not good teacher of zone defences so I don't usually play them. Our zone defence was actually introduced in order to work on zone offense in which teams usually switched to because we are too fast and too big for most teams. Most of their offense comes from dribble penetration. Our theory was that if we could stop them from getting in the key, their shooters won't get as open. Playing zone also kept our big guys in the key instead of out on the wing. We tried this in the 4th quarter in the last game and it actually slowed them down quite a bit. We thought that these three adjustments would allow us to control tempo and allow our size to make a difference.

Before the game I got a great omen. I don't usually talk to the other coaches before the games, I like to keep my game face on and focus. Before the game the St Norbert coach came up to me and started talking to me. He was telling me how parents of his players liked how we were competitive with them and gave them good games. Ya thanks buddy. He kept talking about whoever wins between us is great and then it hit me! I realized that he was scared and now I had a edge on him mentally! This was great, I knew good things would soon come...but not like this.

In front of a packed crowd, The Wings came out flying out of the gates, literally. They played as best a team can play in a championship game. We started out scoring at will and were up by 10 at the end of the quarter. They didn't press us which I thought was weird but now they would have to because we're up. Sure enough, they pressed us in the second. After turning the ball over the first 2 times, we gave them false hope that it would work on us again. After a timeout to review the press break, we came out and delivered an early knock out blow. We broke the press with ease and also ended up with lay ups at the end of it. Having either one of our 2 best players catch up the floor had the defence at their mercy. Not only were they making lay ups but when we missed, we had our bigs trailing for put backs. Our lead which went down to 5 at one point shot right up to 20 and the noise in the crowd made it sound like a home game.

In the locker room up 20, what could I say to these guys? Normally I'd talk about the game being 0-0 and we would have to re-establish ourselves, blah, blah, blah. I was just so pumped. I walked in last to a roaring locker room and when I got their attention, I yelled out "is this game over?" "NO!" "Do we want to win by more???" "Yes!" "Now let's go out there and pound them! And then we will take our rightful place on top of the league!!!!! "1-2-3-TEAM!"

SNC started out the 3rd hitting a pair of 3's right away and they were starting to get a bit of momentum. The lead would get down to 12ish but big time plays and shots were made by everyone would keep the lead at 15 going into the 4th. We had talked about them making a push and we had to weather the storm earlier in the quarter in a timeout. Going into the 4th, I heard guys yelling at each other that it was our time to push back and lets push harder. They wanted to keep the foot on the gas. The last thing I told everyone in that timeout "by no means should anyone think for one second that we might lose this game because WE AREN'T". The look they showed me after that comment let me know that it was over. We weren't going to lose.

The fourth showcased our depth and talent (if people didn't already know). We scored in every which way possible with everyone chipping in. Turnovers were kept to a minimum and frustration had totally set in. You could tell because when they scored, it sounded like cheers of false hope and short lived. We answered every last bit of effort. It would take a lot of work for them to score and then we would make a play for an easy lay up or a wide open 3.

With just a few mins left, hugs and congratulations were going around the bench and we knew it was just a matter of time. We stood and clapped for the last minute and as we counted down to zero, the guys ran out and cheered. It took a second for it to kick in but then I was right in there jumping around with the team. We did our pregame jumping around yelling "OOOOOOOOOOOO.....1-2-3-TEAM!" After getting our ribbons and taking some pics we got back into the locker room. A really quick recap of the game ended with "you have all just become immortals under the new title of CHAMPIONS!!!" And we all yelled out "CHAMPIONS!!!!". After yelling that a few more times, we had our team prayer for all of our blessings this season.

It was a moment in time that will live on with me forever. I can't describe how happy I was for these young men. This is why I coach. I am so proud of those young men, they believed in me and I in them and they let me have the best seat in the house and took me for a wild ride. I told those guys that I love them and there wasn't anyone that could take this moment from any of us. In the past I probably would have shed a few tears but tonight was different. All I could feel was how happy and proud I was of the team. There would be no tears only cheers. "CHAMPIONS!!!!"

BIG BOY YOU KNOW!!!!!

Happy Birthday Ant! For those of you that don't know, Ant and Dela were instrumental in Shane, Kris, and my development in both tennis and basketball. Even though they were both at least 5 yeras older than us, they never took it easy on us. They made us work for everything we earned. Thanks for all the rides to school, watching the finals, always having your apartment open to us, and everything else over the years. Happy Birthday Tone

Happy Birthday Bobby!!!!

I'm sure that you remember this picture after we won men's league in our final year at Lakehead. It's too bad that we don't have student loans anymore to buy each other shoes for presents. As the Malone to my Stockton, we ran the pick and roll for many easy buckets in our Thunder Bay careers. You keep cutting and screening and I'll keep finding you.

your PG,

Another Gold for Canada....

So we were just chilling at my place last night because it was Shane, Eva, and Kya's last night in Winnipeg. Eva, Christine, and I were flipping through the channels and saw that we had won another gold medal in the Ice Dance from Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. We eventually saw the replay a bit later on and wow what a performance! I don't know much about Ice Dance but I didn't need to know that much to know that they had a flawless performance. They looked in sync the whole time and their tricks were pretty cool. There would be no way that I could even skate with my legs apart like Scott did let alone have Tessa on my back. It was cool to see how pumped they were when they got their scores and was funny when Scott originally told Tessa that they came in second after the World Champions from Russia went before he hugged her and told her that they won. It was great to see them excited for themselves and their country and they sang along with the rest of the Canadians as O Canada played. Thank you Tessa and Scott for letting us share in your Olympic moment!

Don't Hit the Panic Button Yet...

One day later it still stands that Canada lost yesterday to USA. With most of Canada watching (except for Mike Garcia), Canada lost 5-3 in what ESPN was calling the "Miracle on Ice II". Yes it was our first loss to the Americans in quite a long time but I don't think that the game yesterday had that much on the line other than playoff positioning. What concerns me though is that most of the media and general public are wondering what's going on with our team. Let's not panic too soon here people. If you remember in 2002, we lost to the Sweeds 5-2 in the round robin. It's tough to go an entire tournament without a loss. It's better to lose now than later on in the knock out stages.

The loss yesterday will get Team Canada refocused and back to work. Yesterday was the first game that I was able to watch these Olympics and we didn't look that crisp for the most part. We were really shaky in our end especially with Brodeur trying to do too much with the puck. Our breakout was pretty shaky too with lots of turnovers in our end. Sure we out shot them but most of our shots were right at Ryan Miller's chest (he did have a great game though). We did have flashes of the potential that our talented team is capable of. Canada will take today off and get set for the German's on Tuesday and once we take care of them, it's the Russians after that. We knew somewhere along the line we had to play them anyways. Our road is tougher this way but I still think that we will come out on top. We are just too talented. We have too many leaders on the team for us to break down like we did 4 years ago.

So to all those people in the media counting us out, there's still plenty of hockey yet to play. Regardless of the road we take to gold, the results will still be the same. Go Canada Go!

Rivalry Week in Division 4: MOBB vs K9's

So today is not only Michael Jordan's birthday but it is also the day where Mobb goes up against their rivals/ friends the K9's. This marks the 4th meeting in Mobb's history with the K9's taking 2 out of the 3 head to head match ups. For those of you that don't know, on Tuesday nights Mobb plays pick up ball with various friends and other ballers which most of them make up the core of the K9's. Over the years we have developed a friendly rivalry. We cheer for each other when we aren't playing each other but tonight it we will not be friends till after the game.

Mobb enters this game with an 11-0 record and the K9's are right behind them in the standings with a 9-2 record. There is a contrast in styles as the K9's are big and will try to pound the ball inside and feed off Tu Tran who is their leading scorer. Mobb's run and gun style will be put to the test today. They will need to grab rebounds in order to get out on the break. If we can get out in the open floor and hit a good percentage of our shots, we should be right in the game at the end.

Tonight marks my first time playing the K9's and I am excited to play in a game that means just a little bit more. Hopefully I can control the tempo and get the ball to Kris and Eric for some open looks and to Mike, Adam, and Bob on the break. I will need to play well in order to get the other guys going. As much as we are focused on our defensive match ups, they have to chase us around when they are on defence. Playing on a bigger court at U of W should work in our favour. So let's get them tonight boys as we look to remain perfect and win our 12th game in a row. Can we do it??? Why Not???

Valentine's Day Wish

Obviously today is an especially depressing day for me. Being single and can't be with the girl that I love; today would probably have be the worst day ever until I heard something that made me think of today in a different way.

I was flipping through the channels checking out some Olympic coverage until I came to what I think was the Church of Rock on tv. I heard that pastor say "you are only as good as the people around you...." That got me thinking a bit. Today is commercially meant for you to express your feelings to your significant other but let's not forget the other people in our lives who are always there and will always be.

For me, I want to take this time to say thank you to all the people that I know and love. Whether you are friend or family or both, there's is nothing that I wouldn't do for you if you asked me. To call someone a friend is to say that you care about them. I am who I am because of you. Thank you and Happy Valentine's Day.

Battle Vs State.....

Our final game of the trip was against NC State. For those of you that don't know, we are to NC State what Duke is to us. On the way to Raleigh (with a quick stop at Duke) I thought up all possible comebacks for anyone that would chrip me that night. Carolina Blue in a sea of red?? So here's what I came up with:
1. Last time NCST won a national championship was 1985 - we've won 3 since then.
2. That was probably the last time NCST was at a final four - we've been there at least 8 times
3. We've won the last 7 games and 11 out of 12. No members of that team had EVER beaten Carolina in their careers.
4. Name the last lottery pick that came from NC State????? Anyone? Me..heck I don't even know. Tom Gugliotta and David Thompson were the only 2 retired jersey names that I knew.
This among other little things, I had in mind to fire back if need be. I knew that the Wolfpack fans won't be like the "Wine and Cheese crowd" from Chapel Hill.

We got to the RBC Center (also where the Carolina Hurricanes home) around 6ish for a 9 pm start. Our tickets were in a special section that allowed those ticket holders to come in a half hour before the doors open to the general public and go to a lounge for food and or drinks. So Dante and I got to go in at 7 and have a beer while we waited to sit courtside. Everywhere we went in that place, people were giving us a hard time. Everyone from the door people saying that our tickets were fake, to the concession people jacking up prices, and even the occasional student booing in Dante's face. So we got to sit as close as we could to the court for warm ups again. We yelled out Dexter's name to get his attention. He looked over at us (I was wearing his number again) for a second, realized that we had seen him last week, and smiled and pointed to us. That was pretty cool. After that we got the attention of the student section right in front of us and some kind words were exchanged. Dante had to stop me from continuing but I knew that I would get the last laugh somehow.

The game was great from our point of view. We started out the game with a 3 point play to start the game and it shut the ruckus Wolfpack fans up a bit. The game was a close one for the most part with us going into the locker room up 4 after with standing a small run at the end of the half. State ended up coming out of the locker room on a 10-1 run to start the half. The place was ruckus but we showed a bit of poise and got control back and went on a huge run of our own. With about 5 mins left in the game, we had a 17 point lead and people started to clear out knowing that the game was over. I was kind enough to wish everyone a safe ride home.

So once it was official and we had won by 15, I decided to go back down to the students section to get the last word in. I ran down, got everyone attention and thanked them for a great time. I told them that they were great hosts and that I'd love to come back again next year. Once I started, I got a course of swears and other profanities yelled at me. I made sure to bring out all the facts and get back at everyone that said something directly towards me before the game. By this time, girls were now swearing at me too so I thought that this would be the time to make my way out. On my way back up the stairs, a bunch of the students on a set of stairs parallel to me shouted death threats to me and that they would see me in the parking lot. Seeing that I had pissed off about 300 people, I decided to go to the bathroom and tie up my shoe laces in case I needed to run. Once I got out of the bathroom, Dante and I took a few more pics before making our way outside. Once outside I was a bit freaked out that someone would jump me. I was really scared and jumpy. We eventually made it to the car safe and started our journey home. What a way to end the trip!

Behind Enemy Lines....

So what would a trip to Chapel Hill be like without visiting Duke???? We stopped here on the way to Raleigh to take a few pics. Before the trip I was telling everyone that I would walk around Duke with my UNC jersey on. When I got there however, I was pretty scared (not going to lie) that I would get the crap kicked out of me so I tucked in my jersey and made sure that no baby blue would be seen on me(except for certain pics as you can see). We walked up to Cameron Indoor Stadium (some UNC fan put "Hansbrough Indoor Stadium" last year) and to our surprised, the doors were unlocked so we walked in. We could hear sounds of balls bouncing and people yelling as we went upstairs. As we went to look into the stadium itself we noticed that Duke was actually practicing at that time. I saw Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith while Dante saw Wojo. Can you believe it???!!! We didn't get a chance to take a good look because we didn't want to get caught (especially with me in a UNC jersey). People were actually already camping out for when UNC comes to town. By the way, the game was only 5 weeks away still and they had already been there for a couple of weeks. Are they crazy??? Nah, I'd do it to watch UNC play Duke. Great experience. Truly felt like I was behind enemy lines.

More Pics....

I know it's been a while since I've posted something. Here's some more pics of the Bobcats/ Magic experience. Unfortunately, Dante's camera ran out of battery just as the starting lineups were being announced. Enjoy.
